Report Highlights how Privatization of Education Negatively Impacts Girls in Many Parts of the World

Thirteen organizations today, included the Right to Education Project, highlighted the discriminatory impacts of privatizing education on women and girls.  The organizations submitted a brief to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) to inform its discussion on girls’ and women’s right to education.  The organizations argue that privatization exacerbates gender discrimination and that States must ensure the full enjoyment of the right to education for all through a fully-accountable public education system.

Civil Society Organisations Discussed Privatisation and the Right to Education during the Human Rights Council

In Geneva, during the June session of the Human Rights Council, civil society organisations, including the Right to Education Project, participated in a series of events to discuss the important issue of the growing trend of privatisation in education and its impact on the right to education.

My name is Ayman Qwaider. I am 27 years old and I was born and raised in the Gaza Strip. I was lucky to study in Spain and I now live in Australia with my wife, Sameeha, who was recently awarded a PhD Scholarship in Perth. I am currently studying for a PhD on education policies and social reform. Our dream to pursue higher education became true after facing huge hurdles. But many other Palestinian students from Gaza are still dreaming and will likely never see their dreams come true.

Consultation on the Impact of the Privatisation in/of Education on Girls’ Right to Education

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is preparing a General Recommendation on girls and women’s right to education, which is a document produced by the Committee to give guidance on the interpretation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

Human Rights Council Side Event: Privatisation and its Impact on the Right to Education - 12 June 2014

Uncontrolled privatisation of various essential social services has grown in the last two decades, whether it be prisons, health, water, or land, with devastating impacts for the enjoyment of human rights without discrimination. Education, which had been relatively saved until now, has become in the last years the new area in which investors are rushing into to make profit, with the support of major development agencies and international financial institutions.

Entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure

Today, 14 April 2014, the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure has entered into force following its ratification by the required 10 countries: Albania, Bolivia, Gabon, Germany, Montenegro, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Slovakia and Costa Rica.

South Africa: Back to Court for the Non-Delivery of Textbooks

In Limpopo, a poor rural province in northern South Africa, there is a ongoing education crisis. Many schools do not have access to key components of the right to basic education, such as toilets, drinking water, desks, paper, chalk and even classrooms, to ensure a conducive learning environment.
